Western Sydney is one of the most culturally diverse regions in Australia. Families here speak dozens of languages at home, hold rich and varied cultural traditions, and raise children who move between worlds every single day — the language of home and the language of the wider community.
For these families, choosing a childcare centre is about far more than location and opening hours. It is about finding a place where their child will be understood — not just in words, but in culture, in comfort, and in belonging.
This is why multilingual childcare matters. And it is why, at Horsley Kids in Horsley Park, it is one of the things families tell us makes the biggest difference.
The early years of a child’s life — from birth to five — are the most significant period for language development. The brain is building connections at a rate it will never match again. Every word heard, every conversation experienced, every story told contributes to the foundations of communication, literacy, and cognitive development that will support a child for the rest of their life.
For children from non-English speaking backgrounds, the early years present a particular opportunity and a particular challenge. Research consistently shows that children who maintain and develop their home language alongside English grow up with stronger cognitive flexibility, better problem-solving skills, and a more secure sense of identity than children whose home language is abandoned or dismissed.
In other words, bilingualism is not a barrier to learning — it is an asset.
When a child first arrives at an early learning centre, they are navigating a significant transition. They are leaving the familiar world of home and entering a new environment with new people, new routines, and new expectations. For a child from a non-English speaking background, this transition can be doubly challenging — not only is the environment new, but the language in which comfort and care are communicated may be unfamiliar.
A multilingual educator changes this experience entirely.
When a child hears a familiar word — a greeting in Assyrian, a comfort phrase in Vietnamese, a reassurance in Lebanese Arabic — something shifts. The unfamiliar becomes a little more familiar. The anxiety of transition eases. The child begins to trust and, through trust, to learn.
This is not a small thing. It is one of the most powerful foundations a childcare centre can offer.
At Horsley Kids, our team represents over 15 cultures. Our educators speak Assyrian, Italian, Polish, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Sri Lankan, Macedonian, Croatian, Serbian, Maltese, Lebanese, Cambodian and English — and many speak multiple languages.
This is not a deliberate recruitment policy designed for marketing purposes. It is a genuine reflection of the community we serve and the community we are part of. Over 20 years of operating in Horsley Park, our team has grown alongside the families who walk through our doors — and the result is a centre where cultural diversity is not a feature, it is simply who we are.
For families from Assyrian, Vietnamese, Lebanese, Chinese, Croatian and many other backgrounds across western Sydney, this matters deeply. Your child will not spend their first weeks at Horsley Kids unable to communicate their needs, unable to understand the people around them, or unable to ask for help. They will hear a familiar word. They will be answered in a language they understand. They will feel, from the very first morning, that this is a place where they belong.
At Horsley Kids we welcome all children and families of all cultures, religions and family backgrounds. Our educators are sensitive to and respectful of each family’s practices, values and traditions — and we invite families to be active partners in their child’s learning experience.
This is reflected in everything from our menus — which include cultural variety and dishes from different backgrounds planned by our certified dietician — to the ways we celebrate cultural events, acknowledge significant days from multiple traditions, and embed First Nations perspectives and Aboriginal bush tucker traditions through our native stingless beehive program.
The Reggio Emilia philosophy that guides our program is built on deep respect for every child’s individuality and every family’s knowledge. It recognises that culture is not separate from education — culture is education. Every story a family brings through our doors enriches the learning experience of every child in the centre.
No. Research consistently shows that children who maintain their home language alongside English develop stronger overall language skills, not weaker ones. Bilingualism builds cognitive flexibility, vocabulary breadth and communication confidence. At Horsley Kids we actively encourage families to maintain their home language — it is one of the most valuable gifts you can give your child.
Our team speaks Assyrian, Italian, Polish, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Sri Lankan, Macedonian, Croatian, Serbian, Maltese, Lebanese, Cambodian and English. We represent over 15 cultures across our educator team. If you would like to know whether we have an educator who speaks your specific language, please call us on 02 9620 2160 and we will be happy to assist.
We support children from non-English speaking backgrounds through multilingual educators, culturally inclusive menus, celebration of cultural events and traditions from multiple backgrounds, and an environment built on the Reggio Emilia philosophy of deep respect for every child’s individuality and every family’s knowledge. We also provide links to translating and interpreting services for families who need additional communication support.
No. Horsley Kids is a CCS approved centre, which means eligible families can access the Child Care Subsidy to reduce out-of-pocket fees. Our fees are in line with the local area. To find out more about current fees and CCS eligibility, please call us on 02 9620 2160.
If your family speaks a language other than English at home, choosing a childcare centre where that language and culture is understood can transform your child’s experience of early learning. The adjustment period is shorter. The sense of belonging comes faster. The confidence to explore, investigate and participate builds earlier.
And for families who are new to Australia, or navigating the complex experience of raising children across two cultures, a multilingual team is not a nice-to-have. It is a necessity.
Horsley Kids serves families from across western Sydney — from Wetherill Park, Fairfield, Bossley Park, Smithfield, Prairiewood, Liverpool and beyond. Many of these families are part of the large and vibrant Assyrian, Vietnamese, Lebanese, Chinese and Italian communities that make western Sydney one of the most extraordinary places in Australia to raise a child.
If you are looking for a childcare centre where your language is spoken, your culture is respected, and your child will feel at home from the very first day — we would love to welcome your family.
